Do I need to know how to speak French?

In larger cities, such as Paris, it’s not uncommon that locals will know some English. Popular pilgrimage sites, such as Lourdes, will also have a greater knowledge of English. However, it is helpful to become familiar with simple phrases and words before you arrive in France. If you ever have any questions, be sure to ask your guide that accompanies you throughout your pilgrimage.

What currency do they use in France? Do they accept USD?

Accepted Answer

France uses the Euro. Vendors in France will not accept US currency, so plan accordingly. It is wise to take out sufficient cash to get you through a day, as some smaller vendors and shops won’t accept credit cards, or won’t accept credit card payments under a certain amount. Withdrawing cash from ATMs in France is usually the most cost-efficient way of converting money, though you may want to check with your local bank first.

What kind of outlets do they use in France?

France utilizes two plug types: C and E. France also operates at 230 volts and 50 hertz. When bringing electronics over to a foreign country, it is imperative that you make sure your device operates at the same voltage. If it does not, you may have to bring a voltage converter along as well. Many plugs and converters are sold in tandem.

Do I need to tip in restaurants?

Tipping is not as common, nor is it deemed as “necessary” in France. However, it is customary to tip around 5-10% for a good dining experience. If you enjoyed your meal, it’s not a bad idea to show your appreciation for it!

Do I need a visa to go to France?

US citizens do not need a visa to travel to France. If you are not an US citizen, you will need to check on the requirements of your home country.

Like any country, France’s safety varies by location. In more touristy areas, you will find the typical pickpockets who will target what they assume to be tourists. Be aware of your surroundings and keep all important items in pockets that are only accessible by you. Never accept anything that is pushed into your hand by a vendor.

Can I use my credit card?

Credit cards are widely accepted, with the exception being small shops or smaller purchases. Be sure to contact your bank or credit card company to tell them of your plans to use your card abroad prior to leaving the US.

What etiquette should I be aware of?

Perhaps the biggest piece of etiquette to be aware of is greeting one another. When approaching someone to speak or make a transaction, it is polite to first greet them with a 'bonjour (hello).'  You may find that your interactions will be smoother after this simple pleasantry.

What is the food like in France?

Breakfast in France is typically a sweet pastry and black coffee or black coffee with milk and sugar. Lunch is usually a longer affair, regardless of what the meal consists of. The midday meal can be as simple as a baguette, or can consist of more elaborate plates. For dinner, the French eat at least a two-course meal. Delicious cheese is served after the main course, before dessert.
