Stop at the Monastery of Jeronimos, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, for a panoramic view of the city, including the Tagus River. Lisbon / Fatima

After breakfast we make our way to Fatima, where our Blessed Mother appeared to three shepherd children. It is where, in 1917, thousands witnessed what became known as the “Miracle of the Sun.” The message of Fatima has inspired generations of Catholics to pray the rosary daily for peace and reparation. Visit the Chapel of Apparitions before praying at the graves of Sts. Francisco and Jacinta, and Servant of God Lucia. This evening, we participate in the Stations of the Cross along the Via Sacra or the candlelight rosary procession in the heart of the shrine. (B, D, Mass) Overnight Fatima

Meals: None (travel day)
Day 5 · April 21
Fatima

This morning, we enjoy a guided tour of the Museum of the Shrine of Fatima, full of history and relics of the apparitions and pilgrims who have visited throughout the last century. View the crown of Our Lady of Fatima, with the bullet used in the assassination attempt on St. Pope John Paul II as part of its unique design. Afterwards, explore the tiny village of Aljustrel where the three children lived. Continue to Valinhos where Our Lady appeared to the children after they were unjustly imprisoned. It is here she encouraged them and told them they must still come every 13th of the month to see her. This evening offers another opportunity to participate in the Stations of the Cross along the Via Sacra or the candlelight rosary procession in the heart of the shrine. (B, D, Mass) Overnight Fatima

Fatima – Day Trip to Alcobaca and Santarem

Today we will take an excursion outside of Fatima. Our first stop will be at Alcobaca to visit the 12th-century Monastery of Alcobaca, the largest church in Portugal and one of the most prestigious monasteries in medieval Europe. This afternoon, continue to the Church of St. Stephen in Santarem to see one of the greatest Eucharistic Miracles, “The Bleeding Host.” In the 13th-century, a woman stole the host to take to a fortune teller, but as she was taking it out of church the host began to bleed profusely. Afraid, she put it in a trunk at her home only to be awakened in the middle of the night to a bright light coming from the trunk. Taking the host back to the priest, he put it in a wax pyx. Another miracle happened the next morning when they found that the wax had turned into its own crystal pyx where it can be venerated to this day. After time for prayer here, return to Fatima, where we can participate once again in the evening prayer activities. (B, D, Mass) Overnight Fatima

Anticipated Weather · April

Lisbon 60–72°F Warm & Mostly Sunny · Late April Lisbon in late April is one of Europe's great spring gifts — warm, bright, and full of the particular energy of a city that has always faced the Atlantic with open arms. The hilltop panorama from the Jerónimos Monastery and the quiet streets around the birthplace of St. Anthony reward the pilgrim who arrives with unhurried eyes and no agenda but gratitude.
Fátima / Aljustrel / Valinhos 55–68°F Mild & Partly Sunny · Late April Fátima sits inland on a plateau, a few degrees cooler than Lisbon and more prone to cloud and passing showers in April. Three days here at the height of the spring pilgrimage season — the Via Sacra at dusk, the candlelight procession, the tiny village of Aljustrel — offer the kind of sustained encounter with a sacred place that a single afternoon can never provide.
Alcobaça / Santarém 57–70°F Mild & Partly Sunny · Late April The Portuguese countryside between Fátima and the Tagus valley is at its most beautiful in late April — rolling green hills, flowering roadsides, and the great medieval monastery of Alcobaça glowing in spring light. The Church of the Holy Miracle in Santarém asks nothing of its visitor except stillness before a relic that has been quietly waiting there for seven centuries.

Late April in Portugal is warm and largely pleasant, though Fátima's inland plateau can bring cooler temperatures and occasional showers — a light waterproof jacket is worth packing. Comfortable walking shoes are essential for Lisbon's hilly cobblestone streets. Modest attire is required at all churches and sacred sites throughout (shoulders and knees covered).

What Pilgrims Are Saying

The Marian focus structured our prayer, both personal and communal, and our reflection, giving room for Saint James and Saint Ignatius. The smaller group was ideal actually. By the second day we bonded and everyone knew everyone else's name.   View More

Director of the tour was excellent. [Our tour manager] was compassionate, understanding, knowledgeable. She knew how much to talk and how much silence we needed to process what she was saying to us. She was attentive to the individuals within the group. Her labor to make the pilgrimage as smooth as possible was evident at all times.

Knowing that Richard and the other staff were praying for us back here in the States gave me a sense of safety and comfort. Although I had not direct contact with the US staff after Richard saw us off at the airport, I still felt the care given.
