From some of the earliest Christian communities in Europe to the great modern Saints like Edith Stein from World War II, Germany has a long and storied Catholic history.

“The path is not long, but the way is deep. You must not only walk there, you must be prepared to leap.”

-St. Hildegard of Bingen

DACHAU

A sobering but essential part of any pilgrimage to Germany, visitors come to the memorial at Dachau to remember and pray for the many victims of the Holocaust. More than 32,000 lost their lives at Dachau, and 2,720 clergy were held there. Nearly 95% of those were Roman Catholic priests.

Altötting

This tiny shrine is known as the “Lourdes of Germany” for the many healings that have occurred here.

Cologne Cathedral

Born to a Jewish family, St. Edith Stein began her life as a Christian here when she was baptized on January 1, 1922. Twenty years later, after becoming a Carmelite nun, she would die a martyr at Auschwitz.

Weiskirche

In 1738, tears were seen on a statue of the Scourged Christ. The church was built in response to their growing numbers, with the aim to “make the supernatural visible” through sculptures and murals. Many pilgrims have professed miraculous healings after praying before the statue of Jesus, which sits on the altar to this day.

Eibingen Abbey

Today you’ll find the Benedictine nuns of this community, founded by St. Hildegard of Bingen, ‘singing the same daily Benedictine office, breathing the same air, and trying to capture the spirit of their great 12–century predecessor.

St. Ursula Basilica

Every year thousands of visitors and pilgrims come to the basilica to see the Golden Chamber, a chapel built with thousands of bones and dedicated to St. Ursula and the virgin martyrs.

  • “When you seek truth, you seek God whether you know it or not.”
