Assisi

St. Mary of the Angels Basilica

A golden statue of Our Lady stands atop this church known for housing the Porziuncola inside--the small church beloved by St. Francis and part of his amazing life.

Porziuncola

This tiny space St. Francis refurbished after he had a vision of Christ asking him to “Rebuild My Church,” where St. Clare became a nun and St. Francis died in 1226.

Basilica of St. Francis

This beautiful church overlooks Assisi and holds the tomb of St. Francis and the graves of some of his earliest followers.

San Damiano Cross

The crucifix that Christ spoke to St. Francis through, telling him to rebuild the Church. It hangs in the Basilica of St. Clare where the faithful gather to pray underneath it.

Convent of San Damiano

Where it all began. St. Francis received his calling here in 1205 when the San Damiano crucifix came alive telling St. Francis to rebuild the Church. St. Clare began her Poor Clare Order here and died here.

Monte Subasio/L’Eremo delle Carceri (the Carceri Hermitage)

Just outside the walls of Assisi, St. Francis and his followers established their first home in the caves to work and pray. It was one of the saint’s favorite places of retreat to pray and contemplate.

Chiesa Nuova and Oratory of San Francesco Piccolina

The remains of the building believed to be where St. Francis of Assisi was born. It has been turned into a small chapel.

Cathedral of San Rufino

Assisi’s main church built in honor of the third-century bishop St. Rufino who brought Christianity to Assisi. After preaching the Gospel, he was martyred by being thrown into a river with a stone around his neck.

Basilica of St. Clare

It holds the only relics of the great saint who evangelized Assisi and the world. St. Clare’s blonde hair that was cut off by St. Francis when she became a nun is displayed, along with St. Francis’ patched tunic.

Monte Subasio

The mountain Assisi is built upon with winding roads, green landscapes, and spectacular views.

Santa Maria Sopra Minerva

An ancient Roman temple dating to the first century. It is now dedicated the Virgin Mary, the true queen of wisdom, as a Catholic Church belonging to the Franciscans.

Cascia

Tomb of St. Rita

One of the saints graced with the wounds of the stigmata—hers on the forehead—she is known as the saint of the impossible.

Eucharistic Miracle of Cascia

Held in the Basilica of St. Rita in Cascia where the saint’s remains are also located. In 1330, a priest put a consecrated host in a breviary and it began to bleed. It is not related to Saint Rita.

Florence

Ponte Vecchio

Meaning Old Bridge, it was built in Roman times and still contains shops on it – once a staple of all the bridges during medieval times. One of the most famous bridges in the world, it is thought to have been designed by a Dominican friar.

Duomo

Florence’s cathedral with its unique dome stands tall over the city. It houses the remains of the third century martyr, St. Reparata. It is a stunning work of art and

Baptistry

The oldest religious monument in Florence where all Catholics in Florence were baptized until the end of the 19th century. Its breathtaking interior cannot be matched. Baptisms are still held here.

Santa Maria Novella

The main Dominican Church houses stunning frescoes and artwork known throughout the world.

Santa Croce

The Basilica of the Holy Cross is the largest Franciscan church in the world, known for its 16 chapels decorated in frescos by the famous artist Giotto. It is also known as the burial place of some of the most-well known Italians: Michelangelo, Galileo, and the composer Rossini, making it known as the Temple of Italian Glories.

Uffizi Gallery

In the heart of Florence is one of the world’s grandest and oldest art galleries. It ranks with the Louvre in Paris for its priceless artwork.

Lanciano

Miracle of the Eucharist at Lanciano

In the Church of St. Francis in Lanciano we see the beauty of Christ’s words that the Eucharist is His flesh and blood. Here, the host turned to flesh and the wine to blood. The miracle is kept in an ornate reliquary for the faithful to ponder and venerate.

Loreto

Holy House of Loreto

Ancient tradition says this is the holy home where the Virgin Mary was born, grew up, and received the announcement from the Archangel Gabriel she was to be the Mother of God.

Manoppello

Basilica of the Volto Santo (Basilica of the Holy Face)

The Church in Manoppello houses the holy veil of Veronica, which she used to wipe the face of Christ as He was carrying His cross on the way to His crucifixion.

Milan

Church of Sant’Ambrogio (Church of St. Ambrose)

The original church was consecrated by St. Ambrose himself in 386 A.D. before being rebuilt in the 11th century. It houses this holy bishop’s remains who is one of the most important figures in early Christianity.

Sforza Castle

The largest monument in Milan. It was a one-time fortress that now houses various museums with remarkable artwork from various time-periods.

Nettuno

Old Quarter of Nettuno

Walk medieval streets and small squares just south of Rome. See the fortification built on the sea to protect the city once known as the breadbasket of the area.

Basilica of Our Lady of Grace and St. Maria Goretti

Visit the place that holds the body of one of the most courageous teen-agers in the history of the Church: St. Maria Goretti. She defended her chastity to the point of death and forgave her attacker who later became a lay brother of the Franciscans where he lived out a life of penance after his prison sentence.

Orvieto

Orvieto Cathedral

The Gothic cathedral housing the Corporal of Bolsena, the blood-stained corporal preserved since the Eucharistic Miracle of 1263. In nearby Bolsena, a visiting priest had doubts of the True Presence of the Eucharist and witnessed the consecrated Host begin to bleed during the Mass. He immediately went to visit Pope Urban IV in nearby Orvieto to show him the miracle.

San Brizio Chapel

Located inside the Orvieto Cathedral, the San Brizio Chapel is a gem housing masterpieces by Fra Angelico that inspire the faithful to prayer and contemplation. The art frescoes by Luca Signorelli are allegedly the inspiration behind Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel.

Padua

Basilica of St. Anthony

The Basilica of Saint Anthony, whom the people of Padua call Il Santo (The Saint), is the most important monument in the city and one of the world’s most important art treasures. The church is recognized as an International Shrine by the Holy See. St. Anthony of Padua died in 1231, and in 1263 when his body was transferred to the Basilica, his body had disintegrated except for his tongue and vocal cords, both of which are now on display in reliquaries in the Basilica.

Scrovegni Chapel

This tiny church was commissioned in 1303 by Enrico Scrovegni. It is completely covered in vibrant frescoes by Giotto, depicting scenes of the life of Jesus, stories from the Bible, and allegorical images of the Vices and Virtues. Scrovegni’s tomb lies behind the altar, adorned with statues by Giovanni Pisano.

Pavia

Basilica of San Pietro in Ciel d’Oro

The Basilica of St. Peter in the Gold Sky, is one of the great Romanesque style churches in Northern Italy. While dedicated to St. Peter the Apostle, it houses the tomb of St. Augustine of Hippo. Its gold-leaf dome is breathtaking.

San Giovanni/ Monte Sant’Angelo

San Giovanni Rotondo

Housing one of the most popular Catholic shrines in the world, the Shrine of St. Padre Pio, it centers on his life as Capuchin monk and priest known for his supernatural gifts and having the stigmata: the marks of Christ crucified.

Capuchin Monastery

Built on a place that used to be where shepherds grazed their sheep, it became the monastery where Padre Pio lived out his extraordinary life. Capuchin spirituality is based on the Passion of Christ.

Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie

Meaning Our Lady of Grace, it was built to accommodate the thousands of pilgrims who visited St. Padre Pio when he was alive. Everything he owned or touched has been carefully preserved here.

Home for the Relief of the Suffering

In 1940, St. Padre Pio directed that this hospital be built. It is considered one of the most efficient hospitals in Europe.

Padre Pio Pilgrimage Church

Behind Santa Maria delle Grazie it is a notable example of modern architecture built to accommodate the millions of visitors that come each year. It seats 6,500 people or 30,000 standing outside.

Padre Pio’s Tomb

St. Padre Pio known for his love of God, the poor, and his supernatural gifts lies in an incorrupt state for the faithful to visit.

Monte Sant’Angelo

Attractive white-washed houses overlook the Adriatic Sea where the beautiful shrine is dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel.

Grotto of St. Michael the Archangel

One of the rare places St. Michael the Archangel appeared stating he would protect the city and that prayers would be granted at the site. It has been visited by countless popes and saints, including St. Padre Pio.

Siena

Basilica of St. Francis in Siena

Known for the presence of the Holy Hosts where 223 consecrated hosts have been preserved since 1730. Thieves stole the consecrated hosts that were later found in a collection box.

St. Dominic Basilica

Holding some of the relics of St. Catherine of Siena, who was a lay Dominican, it is the church where she often prayed.

Home of St. Catherine of Siena

Walk where this saint lived with her family and where her life began to become one of the most well-known saints in Catholicism. A convent stands on the land where Catherine’s home once stood.

Piazza del Campo

A unique place of beauty and architecture in Siena, built in a distinctive shell-like shape. The paving is made in a fishbone style to resemble the folds in the Virgin Mary’s cloak.

Subiaco

Sacro Speco (Sacred Grotto) of St. Benedict

The Monastery of St. Benedict holds the cave where he lived as a hermit before organizing the greatest monastic system in the world through his Rule of St. Benedict. The oldest portrait drawn of St. Francis of Assisi before his death hangs on the wall.

Abbey of St. Scholastica

Still an active monastery of St. Benedict’s monks, it is named for his twin sister who founded her own order of Benedictine nuns.

Monte Cassino Abbey

One of the best-known abbeys in the world. The earthly remains of St. Benedict and his twin sister, St. Scholastica, rest here. It is known as the Lighthouse of Western Civilization.

Villa d'Este

Renaissance Villa of Cardinal Ippolitio d’Este (in Tivoli)

One of the first “wonderland gardens,” it is an amazing place of garden design and artwork with grottos, fountains, and music.

Venice

Bridge of Sighs

This magnificent bridge passes over the Rio di Palazzo and connects the Doges Palace to the Prigioni, the prisons that were built across the canal in the late 16th century. Legend has it that prisoners crossing the bridge on their way to prison would sigh as they caught their last glimpse of Venice through the tiny windows. The bridge became particularly famous after poet Lord Byron published Childe Harold's Pilgrimage, which included the verse, "I stood in Venice, on the Bridge of Sighs; a palace and a prison on each hand."

Canals and Footbridges

There are no roads and no automobile traffic as you drift down the famous canals in gondolas or water taxis to cathedrals, palazzos, and palaces. Built on 118 islands crisscrossed by 160 canals, Venice has beautiful foot bridges to help you explore this city.

Doges Palace

The Doges Palace is a showcase of Venetian Gothic style and is one of the main landmarks of the city. The palace was the residence of the Doge of Venice, the supreme authority of the former Venetian Republic. It was founded in 1340, and extended and modified in the following centuries. It became a museum in 1923.

St. Mark’s Square

St. Mark’s Square is the spectacular epicenter of Venice. Called the “drawing room of Europe,” by Napoleon, the square gets its name from St. Mark’s Basilica, the stunning church where the remains of St. Mark are kept. This intricately designed Cathedral is comprised of 85,000 square feet, five domes, and golden mosaics.
