When will la sagrada familia be finished?

The magnificent Sagrada Familia cathedral in Barcelona, Spain is expected to be completed in 2026. This date was announced by cathedral authorities in March 2024 as they reflected on all that was accomplished the previous year. Although there will be further renovations and other additions after 2026 (including a grand main entrance), the cathedral itself will be officially finished upon completion of the tower of Jesus Christ.

Construction on the cathedral began over 140 years ago. Designed by the famed architect, Antoni Gaudí, the completion will coincide with the 100th anniversary of his death in 1926. Despite the ongoing construction (halted at times for wars and pandemics), visitors have been marveling at what will be the tallest church in the world for decades.

TEMPLE OF THE

BASILICA OF
SANTA MARIA DEL MAR

Although its name has been known since the late 900s, the current church was erected in the early 1300s. Due to wars throughout the centuries, Santa Maria del Mar is one of the only existing Catalan Gothic structures. Many saints have been known to frequent the Mass here, most popularly, St. Ignatius of Loyola.

BARCELONA

Completed in 1448, this Gothic cathedral is dedicated to St. Eulalia and is known for its rooftop gargoyles. St. Eulalia, the patroness of Barcelona, was martyred in what is now the public square in front of the church. Her body is entombed within and can be venerated today.
