Rome

We begin early this morning with some free time for prayer at St Peter’s before we walk to the NAC for a unique view of the city. Afterwards, we join thousands of other pilgrims in St. Peter’s Square to pray the Angelus with the Pope and receive his blessing (per his schedule). This afternoon, we travel to another of the four major basilicas of Rome – St. Paul Outside the Walls. Though it was destroyed by a fire in 1823, it was originally built by Constantine in the fourth century over the site of St. Paul’s tomb and was rebuilt in the 19th century exactly as it was before the fire. We then journey into the lives of the martyrs as we visit the Catacombs. Here Christians celebrated the Mass in secret and buried the martyrs, including several popes. (B, D, Mass) Overnight Rome

Painted by Michelangelo, it is the most famous ceiling in the world under which popes are chosen to lead the faithful. Day 5 · May 29
Rome / Assisi

We begin today in Santa Croce in Gerusalemme where we get a little piece of Jerusalem thanks to Constantine’s mother, St. Helena, who brought relics of the True Cross and the inscription part of the cross that stated Jesus was King of the Jews. At one time, soil from Jerusalem covered the Basilica’s floor, so it truly was part of the Holy Land. After venerating these relics of Our Lord’s crucifixion, we climb the Scala Santa (Holy Stairs), which our Lord climbed on His way to His condemnation, followed by the Basilica of St. John Lateran, the seat of the Bishop of Rome. This afternoon we depart Rome and travel north to Assisi. Upon arrival, we will visit St. Mary of the Angels Basilica, site of the Porziuncola, the tiny church in the woods where St. Francis began his ministry and where St. Clare began her religious life, before checking into our hotel for dinner and overnight. (B, D, Mass) Overnight Assisi

Meals: None (travel day)
Day 6 · May 30
Assisi

We begin our day in the heart of Assisi in the Shrine of Renunciation within St. Mary Major church. This shrine was built to commemorate the spot where St. Francis renounced his wealth and family and began his life of poverty and service to the Lord. It is now where the tomb of St. Carlo Acutis lies. St. Carlo, the first millennial saint, dedicated part of his short life to cataloging Eucharistic Miracles from around the world. After venerating his resting place, journey to the Basilica of St. Francis to venerate this saint’s burial place. Afterwards is the Basilica of St. Clare, which holds the famous San Damiano Crucifix that spoke to St. Francis, and where the golden locks of St. Clare’s hair and St. Francis’ poor patched tunic are kept. The remainder of the day will be free for personal prayer and activities, including dinner on our own. (B, Mass) Overnight Assisi

Anticipated Weather · May

Rome 65–80°F Warm & Mostly Sunny · Late May Rome in late May is warm, bright, and just ahead of the summer heat — long days with good light on the piazzas and basilicas, and evenings mild enough for the kind of unhurried walking that the Eternal City rewards. The pilgrim who moves through Rome slowly, from the Catacombs to the Scala Santa, finds it far more generous than the one who rushes.
Pisa / Assisi / Umbria 62–76°F Mild & Partly Sunny · Late May Umbria at the end of May is lush, warm, and alive with the particular stillness that descends on Assisi once the afternoon light softens over the basilica. Occasional cloud keeps the heat manageable and the colors deep — ideal conditions for the slow, interior kind of movement that St. Francis himself modeled, and that this place has always asked of those who come.
Turin / Piedmont 62–76°F Mild & Partly Cloudy · Early June Turin in early June is pleasantly warm with the Alps still snowcapped on the horizon — mild days that suit the patient, unhurried movement through Don Bosco's Valdocco, the Shroud's reliquary, and the rooms where young Dominic Savio chose to become a saint. The city rewards those who come not as tourists but as people genuinely willing to be changed by what they encounter.

Late May and early June in Italy are ideal pilgrimage conditions — warm, largely sunny, and manageable before the full summer heat arrives. Pack light layers, a compact umbrella for the occasional afternoon shower in Turin or Umbria, and comfortable walking shoes for Rome and Assisi's stone streets. Modest attire is required at all churches and sacred sites throughout (shoulders and knees covered); a scarf or wrap in your bag ensures effortless entry everywhere.

What Pilgrims Are Saying

It was when I realized, by looking at epitaphs on the walls, that 400 years ago pilgrims were doing the same thing I was doing. They didn’t have A/C busses, beds that were made when they got back to the hotel room, fresh towels, bathrooms, running water. It actually brought me to tears talking about it. The pilgrims that went before me really had to sacrifice to make sure they could walk through a Holy Door. We did all 4 doors in two days. It probably took them a week or more to walk to each door.

Too many to pick just one! I loved visiting the sites of soon to be saint Pier Giorgio. Especially his Mom's family home in Pollone. I also loved how active the whole trip was, averaging about 20,000 steps a day and some days well over 30k. I also really enjoyed being able to got out to lunch and dinner on our own and experience the local ristorante's and the culture of each city we were in. Assisi is always amazing and so is Rome. I enjoyed the tours of St Peter's Basilica and the catacombs during some free time. I especially liked all of the free time that we had to explore all of the sites and have time for ample prayer. It was an active trip but it was also very contemplative and spiritually renewing. Mass with the Pope was another highlight! Praise God for allowing that to happen.

I have traveled to Italy more than a dozen times, and I've been to more than 20 countries on various pilgrimages or other trips. This pilgrimage that you organized for us was - hands down - the best trip I have ever taken (anywhere and for any reason). The ease with which you communicated with us beat even the most relaxing vacations I have had. The guides were knowledgeable, our manager, was fun yet professional (and faithful), and you handled our needs to fix our one issue so easily.
