New Year – New Devotion

New Year – New Devotion

The typical Catholic devotion for the month of January is to the Holy Name of Jesus.  This name was bestowed upon Him even before His birth (Luke 1:31), when the Angel Gabriel appeared to Mary.

St. Paul spoke of the greatness of his name in his letter to the Philippians, when he wrote “God greatly exalted Him and bestowed on Him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth.” (Phil 2:9-10)

Therefore, it is fitting that over time, devotion to the Holy Name grew. The entire month is dedicated to this devotion, but there is also a specific Feast of the Holy Name as well. Historical records show this feast originated in the latter 1400s as a local devotion in Europe, first spreading to the entirety of the Franciscan order in 1530 and further still over the centuries following. It was made a Universal feast in 1721.

The feast day is now celebrated on January 3 as an optional memorial, meaning you might not necessarily hear this Mass in your church if it is celebrated as a regular weekday.

However, you can bring this devotion into your home and your spiritual life even if your local parish doesn’t celebrate.  The Litany of the Holy Name of Jesus draws us deeper into relationship with our Lord by focusing on all His titles and the names by which He is known.  The text of this litany is below.
