Anticipated Weather · May

Madrid / Ávila / Segovia / Zaragoza 62–78°F Warm & Mostly Sunny · Early May The Spanish meseta in early May is at its most hospitable — warm, clear days with long afternoon light over the golden walls of Ávila, the Gothic spires of Segovia, and the soaring Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar in Zaragoza. The season suits a pilgrim's pace: unhurried, attentive, and open to what each place quietly offers.
Lourdes 52–65°F Cool & Variable · May Lourdes in May sits deep in the Pyrenean foothills — cool, atmospheric, and prone to the kind of shifting cloud and passing rain that has never once dimmed the candlelight procession. The Grotto of Massabielle in misty spring weather has a quality all its own, and the pilgrim who arrives prepared for it rather than despite it tends to receive the most.
Montserrat / Barcelona 62–74°F Warm & Partly Sunny · Mid-May The Mediterranean coast in mid-May is warm, bright, and beautifully alive — ideal for Barcelona's outdoor streets and markets, and for the dramatic ascent to Montserrat, where the serrated peaks and the Black Madonna have drawn pilgrims for seven centuries. The afternoon sea breeze keeps the city pleasant well into the evening.

This pilgrimage moves through three distinct climates — the Spanish interior is warm and dry, Lourdes is cool and variable, and Barcelona's Mediterranean coast is mild and pleasant. Pack a light waterproof jacket for Lourdes and layers for Ávila's cooler altitude. Comfortable walking shoes are essential throughout. Modest attire is required at all churches and sacred sites (shoulders and knees covered); a scarf or wrap kept in your bag ensures effortless entry.

What Pilgrims Are Saying

The Marian focus structured our prayer, both personal and communal, and our reflection, giving room for Saint James and Saint Ignatius. The smaller group was ideal actually. By the second day we bonded and everyone knew everyone else's name.   View More

Director of the tour was excellent. [Our tour manager] was compassionate, understanding, knowledgeable. She knew how much to talk and how much silence we needed to process what she was saying to us. She was attentive to the individuals within the group. Her labor to make the pilgrimage as smooth as possible was evident at all times.

Knowing that Richard and the other staff were praying for us back here in the States gave me a sense of safety and comfort. Although I had not direct contact with the US staff after Richard saw us off at the airport, I still felt the care given.
