Pilgrimage to England and Scotland

London | Oxford | Norwich | Durham | Lindisfarne | Lindisfarne

A journey through England to Scotland connects us with our Anglican patrimony and the roots of our Catholic faith. Walk through the streets of Oxford, just as Chesterton, Lewis , and St. John Henry Newman once did.  Venerate King St. Edmund, Venerable Bede, and St. Cuthbert at their burial places.  Pray at the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham, a major pilgrimage site for Catholics and Anglicans for nearly a millennium. Explore the Holy Island of Lindisfarne and give thanks to our faithful ancestors.  Return from our pilgrimage refreshed and renewed in our shared faith and history.

Pilgrimage Itinerary

Day 1 | September 23 | Arrive London

Late this afternoon, you will make your way to our local hotel to check in and meet up with your fellow pilgrims. Following the first communal Evensong, we’ll enjoy dinner together at the hotel. D – Overnight London

Day 2 | September 24 | London - Oxford day trip

Today we journey outside of London on a day trip to the University city of Oxford. Along the way, we drive through Beaconsfield, the adult home of GK Chesterton and site of his grave. In Oxford, we follow in the footsteps of St. John Henry Newman, who himself converted from Anglicanism. Visit Christ Church Cathedral and the University Church of St. Mary, both integral in his life. View numerous colleges that make up the university, including Trinity and Oriel – both important in the life of St. John Henry Newman – as well as Magdalene College, where CS Lewis taught. During some free time, you may want to stop in at the Eagle and Child Pub, where CS Lewis would gather with his writing colleagues, including JRR Tolkien. This afternoon, we visit The College at Littlemore, where Newman lived and where he was received into full communion with the Church. Later this evening, we return to our hotel in London for dinner and overnight. B, D – Overnight London

Day 3 | September 25 | London / Norwich

Leaving London this morning we drive northwards to Bury St. Edmunds, where King Edmund (later St. Edmund) was martyred by the Danes in 869 and whose bones are buried in the Abbey. Then it is on to Norwich to visit the Cathedral and its cloisters, and the cell of Dame Julian, the great 14th century mystic. We also see some of the wonderful, old and interesting buildings, and picturesque gabled houses with crooked timbers and color‐washed plaster work before checking into our hotel for dinner and overnight. B, D – Overnight Norwich

Day 4 | September 26 | Norwich - Walsingham day trip

This morning, we will depart Norwich for a day trip to Little Walsingham which holds a unique place in history as the premier place for pilgrimage in England for nearly 1000 years, and the patroness of the ordinariate in England. In 1061 the lady of the manor, Richeldis de Faverches, had a series of visions of the Virgin Mary, who showed her the house in Nazareth where the angel Gabriel made his revelation of the forthcoming birth of Jesus. Our Lady asked Richeldis to build a replica of the holy house here in Walsingham. Founded at the time of the Crusades when it was impossible to visit the Holy Land, English Christians were able to visit ‘Nazareth’ in their own country and Walsingham became the premier shrine to Our Lady. Around it grew a large monastery. At its height in medieval times, Walsingham rivalled Canterbury and the great shrines of Europe. We begin our visit with a stop at the Slipper Chapel, built in 1325 as the last and most important of the wayside chapels that pilgrims would stop at on their journey. Then visit the ruins of the Augustinian Priory of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which was one of the premier shrines to Our Lady in England, up until its dissolution in 1538. It has recently been reestablished and welcomed Catholic friars for the first time in centuries. After Mass we will return to Norwich for dinner and overnight. B, D – Overnight Norwich

Day 5 | September 27 | Norwich / Durham

We depart Norwich today and journey north, stopping in the medieval walled city of York, to visit the massive Minster with its majestic towers and priceless stained-glass windows. We will enjoy a walking tour along the winding maze of narrow streets of York where the upper stories of the houses lean precariously towards each other across the roadways. After lunch on our own and free time here, we continue to Durham to check into our hotel for dinner and overnight. B, D – Overnight Durham

Day 6 | September 28 | Durham

Today begins at the Durham Cathedral, burial site of St. Cuthbert and Venerable Bede. We will have a guided tour of this symbol of Normal power and learn all about its 1000+ year history. We can also visit the Cathedral Museum, which will have a special exhibit of the Magna Carta, including original documents on display for its 800th anniversary. The balance of the day will be free for personal prayer time and exploration of this unique city. B, D – Overnight Durham

Day 7 | September 29 | Durham / Lindisfarne / Edinburgh

We depart Durham this morning and travel north, crossing the tidal plain to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne. It was here where St. Cuthbert lived for many years, as well as where he was originally buried. We will visit the ruins of the priory and view the monument marking St. Cuthbert’s original burial spot. After time here for prayer and exploration, we continue our journey north to Edinburgh, where we will check into our hotel for dinner and overnight. B, D – Overnight Edinburgh

Day 8 | September 30 | Depart Edinburgh

Or pilgrimage discovering a deeper love and understanding of our faith and its English patrimony ends after breakfast today. We will make our own way to other sites or the airport for our return journey home. (B)
