The Story of Medjugorje

On June 24, 1981, six children in the small village of Medjugorje in Bosnia-Herzegovina (in what was then the communist country of Yugoslavia) reported seeing apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary. She identified herself to the children as the Queen of Peace. The children were put through intense scrutiny and extensive questioning by the Yugoslav communist regime and by the local church and pastor, who struggled to believe that they were speaking the truth.

The visionaries endured numerous kinds of testing in an effort to determine whether they were lying or hallucinating. In fact, the apparitions of Medjugorje are the most thoroughly investigated apparitions in the history of the Church. All of the testing that was done has concluded that the visionaries are not hallucinating, are not lying, and during their ecstasies, seem to be going through experiences that medical science cannot explain.
The Visionaries Today
Three of the visionaries, Vicka, Marija and Ivan, continue to receive daily apparition up until the present day. Two of the visionaries only have apparitions once a year; Jakov on Christmas Day, and Ivanka on June 25, the anniversary of the Medjugorje apparitions. The final visionary, Mirjana, has apparitions once a month, on the second day of every month, in addition to an annual apparition, on March 18.
The Main Messages
The main messages of Our Lady can be summarized into what is referred to as “the 5 Stones”. This title refers to the 5 little stones that David used to slay the giant, Goliath. In the same way, if we live these 5 little stones in our own lives, we can slay any “Goliath” in our lives.
The Fruits
The Bible tells us “You shall know them by their fruits” Mt 7:20. The fruits of Medjugorje are abundant, varied and have already had tremendous impact on the Church.
The Church's Response
In 2010, Pope Benedict established a commission to investigate Medjugorje and to make recommendations regarding the authenticity of the events (called - The Ruini Commission). The commission completed its work in 2014, and it was later revealed that the commission recommended that the first 7 days of the apparitions be approved. We are still waiting on the Holy Father to make a decision regarding the recommendations of the commission. Read the complete timeline here.
