Catholic Pilgrimage to Italy

A pilgrimage to Italy is like walking into layers of history, art, human drama, and deep faith. Here your feet touch the soil left from Roman times 3,000 years ago as you venture into this land of martyrs, saints, popes, and ancient civilizations. Visit the places that solidified the Catholic faith in the eyes of the world and still proclaim the Gospel of Christ in all its glory. Italy is where people work, pray, learn, and live alongside ancient ruins, art, architecture, and relics. A journey to Italy is about experiencing the sacred bonds of the Catholic faith that enlighten the soul.

"I feel renewed in my vocation. My pilgrimage to Italy, visiting the holy places associated with the apostles and martyrs, inspires me to live faithfully as a Christian and as a priest."
- Fr. Daniel Raab, OSB.

Rome Pilgrimage Sites

Rome beckons with its layers of history, courage of the saints, witness of the martyrs, and prayers of the faithful to form the heart of Catholicism.

Basilica of St. John Lateran

Basilica of St. John Lateran

The Cathedral of the Most Holy Savior and of Saints John the Baptist and the Evangelist in the Lateran is the cathedral church of the Diocese of Rome and serves as the official seat of the pope himself. It is the oldest and highest ranking of the four papal major basilicas and holds the unique title of "archbasilica."
Basilica of San Lorenzo

Basilica of San Lorenzo

Built on the burial site of St. Lawrence himself, the holy relics of St. Lawrence, St. Justin, and St. Stephen reside here. Pope Pius IX, the longest-reigning pope in history, is interred in the gloriously-decorated chapel bearing his name where he convened the First Vatican Council.
Capuchin Crypt

Capuchin Crypt

Under the church of Santa Maria della Concezione, the crypt holds the remains of 4,000 friars. Rather than bury the bones, the friars decorated a chapel with them as a place to pray and reflect on Eternal Life. A plaque in the chapel reads "What you are now, we once were; what we are now, you shall be."

The ETERNAL APPEAL OF Italy
